Customers have been calling for information and assistance on securing their homes before Hurricane Irene arrives in Southern NH. WMUR provides a great all around storm checklist for items you should have prior to any storm, review this list for essentials such as batteries, blankets, emergency kits, etc.
But how should you prepare your home?
• First of all bring inside all exterior items that could blow around and possible smash a window, such as patio furniture, children’s bicycles, trash cans, flower pots, decorative items in your garden, large tree branches etc.
• Do you have missing shingles on your roof? If so securely and safely place a tarp or a piece of plywood to the area in question, this will help prevent water damage from the heavy rain.
• Do you have holes or missing pieces of siding on the exterior of your home? If so securely and safely place a tarp or a piece of plywood over the area to help prevent water damage from the heavy rain.
• Do you have a generator? Fill your generator a head of time and purchase at least one 5 gallon container of gas for reserves. If installing a generator electric hookup, call an experienced electrician such as Evan Jones, Master Electrician to safely hookup your generator.
• Does your basement flood with heavy rains? Keep a sump pump and garden hose on hand to expel the water safely to the exterior of your home. Also have a shopvac handy to vacuum minimum standing water.
• Old dead trees looming near your home? Call a professional tree removal company to safely take down trees that are threatening your home.

When children go back to school

Children are returning to school in the next few weeks and many parents are singing the happy dance. Keith’s favorite TV commercial this time of year is Staples when they play the theme song ‘It is the most wonderful time of the year’. With school starting, Fall is around the corner, and children will be spending more time in the house with their friends. Having a finished basement is a fantastic ‘hang out’ spot for the kids and their friends. We just recently completed a basement remodel in Milford NH for that same reason, a place for the kids to hang out. We live at Baboosic Lake in a reconstructed, rehab, cottage that does not have a basement but is an interesting sprawling ranch. The house has a two car garage and a single car garage, we converted the single car garage into living space for the kids and called it the ‘Hang Out Room’. Currently we are working with a customer in Merrimack NH to add a two car attached garage and convert their existing single car garage into living space for them. In Law Apartment
Over the years we have built home additions for customers in Bedford NH, Amherst NH, Merrimack NH, Nashua NH, Hollis NH, Brookline NH, Milford NH, Mt Vernon NH, Manchester NH and Hudson NH. Some customers were looking for a family room, maybe a family room with a garage underneath, they were looking to increase the living space by building onto the back of there home an master bedroom and enlarging the kitchen at the same time. There are many reasons Homeowners are looking to expand their living space, my favorite addition is the in law apartment because families are looking to care for their elderly parents and what better way then to build an independent in-law apartment for them to be self sufficient but have family members around them. Over the past 10 years we have built 9 in law apartments (which usually include a small kitchen or kitchenette, bedroom, living room and bathroom) and remodeled several basements for families. On most instances the parents sell their house and give the equity to their children to build the addition benefiting both parties.
