Will you sell, remodel or add an in-law apartment?

by Allen on November 5th, 2010

Homeowners are reconsidering selling their homes and are remodeling their existing properties. In the past upgrading to a larger home or a home with more amenities was easy to achieve. Nowadays, applying for a home mortgage can be frightening and possibly unattainable.

This past year we have built two in-law apartments for our customers. One situation, an aging parent is unable to support herself any longer, she sells her home and with her new equity is able to build an in-law addition onto her son’s home. This is a win/win situation for everyone, the mother is able live independently with minimal living expenses and the son has added equity to his home with no out of pocket expenses.

The second scenario is the opposite, a sixty year old couple needs to add on an apartment for their slightly handicapped daughter. She has tried to live independently but needs the assistance of others. A small one bedroom apartment gave her all the confidence she needs and her parents have increased the value of their home.

The decision to remodel: an empty nest couple decides to give their house a face-lift, (house before remodel top right, house after remodel below). They love the neighborhood they have lived in for over 20 years but the outside needs some updating. This family added a two car garage, a front portico, sided their home and installed energy saving replacement windows. From the outside the home looks brand new, the Homeowners feel so uplifted that they love coming home every evening.

What do all three homeowners have in common; they love the neighborhood where they are living. They could not endure the stress of putting their house on the market during this difficult real estate climate and look for a larger home or a two family. All three families preferred staying in the same location and upgraded their current situation with a more affordable alternative that was custom designed for their specific needs.

Everyone’s circumstances are different; remodeling was the answer for these three homeowners. We were able to accommodate their changing circumstances and increase the value of their existing homes. The benefits of remodeling outweighed the stress of putting their house on the market, searching for a new home that may not be exactly what they require and leaving a familiar location.

Each owner defined what “home” meant to them. Allen Remodeling worked with them to make that dream a reality.
